Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day

The Indian cricket team began their tour of England on a positive note on the opening day of the series. In the first inning of the first Test match being played at Headingley in Leeds, two Indian batters scored a century, making the elusive list of Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day.

Team India kicked off their 5-match Test tour of England on a positive note on June 20, the opening day of the 1st Test in Headingley. Team India were asked to bat first by England captain Ben Stokes.

Opening batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul gave India a great start, adding 91 runs for the opening wicket. Rahul was dismissed after scoring 42 runs. Sai Sudharsan on his debut was dismissed for duck.

But after that, new Indian Test captain Shubman Gill and opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal added 129 runs for the 3rd wicket. Both batters also completed their respective century. Team India ended day one of the first inning with 359 runs on the board for the loss of 3 wickets.

List of Instances When Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day

Captain Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper batter remained unbeaten at the end of the opening day’s play. It was Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill who became the talk of the town as both scored a century respectively. This was in-fact only the third time that Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day.

Sachin Tendulkar & Virender Sehwag vs South Africa, 2001

The first time that two Indian batters scored a century in the first inning of a Test tour was back in 2001. Team India toured South Africa in November time. In the first match in Bloemfontein, Team India were 4 down for just 68 runs.

Then, Indian middle-order batters Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, batting at 4 and 6 respective, went on to score their respective century on the opening day.

Tendulkar scored 155 runs off 184 balls while Virender Sehwag scored 105 runs off 173 balls. Team India scored 379 runs in the first inning. But eventually South Africa won the match by 9 wickets. 

The Proteas scored 563 runs in the first inning while India scored only 237 runs in the 2nd inning. South Africa scored easily chased 54 runs target and won by 9 wickets.

Shikhar Dhawan & Cheteshwar Pujara vs Sri Lanka, 2017

The Indian cricket team toured Sri Lanka back in July-August, 2017. The first Test match of the series was played in Galle. Batting first on opening day, Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara scored their respective century. It was only the 2nd instance when Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day.

Shikhar Dhawan lost his opening partner Abhinav Mukund early. He was joined by Cheteshwar Pujara in at number 3. Both the batters added 259 runs partnership for 2nd wicket. Dhawan scored 190 runs off 168 balls before he was dismissed.

Cheteshwar Pujara meanwhile scored 153 runs off 265 balls. India scored gigantic 600 runs in the first inning followed by 240 runs in the 2nd inning with Virat Kohli scoring a century. Sri Lanka in reply scored 291 and 245 runs respectively as India won by 304 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal & Shubman Gill vs England, 2025

Team India have begun their new era in Test cricket under new captain Shubman Gill on a very positive note. On the opening day of the 1st out of 5 match Test series, team India already scored 359 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in the first inning.

A number of batters did well for Team India. But it was especially a day to remember for the duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and new captain Shubman Gill.

While opening the inning, Jaiswal scored 101 runs off 159 balls. He faced the challenges of the new ball very well and deservedly reached his milestone. Meanwhile, new Test captain Shubman Gill came at number 4, a role for him in the end.

The number 4 is a big ask for any batters to replace the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli. And Gill has started things off with a century, on the opening day itself.

After debutant Sai Sudharsan departed for a duck, Shubman Gill came in at the start of the 2nd session and looked in great touch from ball one. The Prince of Cricket, remained unbeaten on 127 runs alongside Rishabh Pant, who himself has scored 65 runs.

Both Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring a century in this match vs England is only the third instance when Two Indian Batters Scored a Century on Test Series Opening Day.

The day 2’s at Headingley in Leeds will be played on June 21, 2025 on Saturday. The action will commence from 3:30 P.M Indian Standard Time (IST).
